The Next Big Thing

After Harry Potter we knew something else would be big, but what? Then suddenly Twilight appeared and for years captured the imagination of our world.
Now Twilight is approaching the end of its movie run and I can't help but wonder what will be the next big thing.

Do you think the next huge book will be YA? Is there room for anything else to get so big? Is there something big right now that I don't know about yet?

I have know idea but you are right--there is always the next big thing.
I hear women's fiction is going to be huge. HUGE.

An explosion! :D :D :D

I know what I would LIKE for it to be. LOL!

Honestly, I think it's going to be something steampunkish maybe. Because that really seems to be making heads turn. Also, I hear "mermaids" are the next big fad genre in YA. So we'll see where that leads. :)
I suspect it will be YA. Word of mouth in schools is huge in building a following. For years my oldest daughter has told to me to write YA books. But God didn't gift me in that way, at least not yet.

I think it will be YA too. Just seems to catch on like wildfire and has a very devoted audience. It will be interesting to see what "it" is.

I think YA is big all the time. The movie that comes to mind is Diary of a Wimpy Kid...they just made (or they are making) the sequel.

Maybe cross-genres? Jane Austen and zombies had a following for a bit and now there is a new Amish-Vampire book out. In fact, I just received an ARC for a Christian Vampire book that I'm pysched to read.

Everything sure does come in waves...
I'm with Anita, Steampunk is growing. I've heard it talked about here and there. Although until Brandi Boddie clarified, I had no idea what it was! And let's face it, who doesn't love mermaids? :)

Definitely YA.

That's what I'm wondering? What Next? I bet it'll be YA too, though.

LOL Wendy! I'd heard it was contemporary romance. *grin*

Anita, I've seen a few mer stories swimming about too. Steampunk has been on the horizon. That's def. an intriguing genre.

Yeah, good point, Eileen. The youth really does drive sales for so many things.

K. yep, waves. The amish/vampire thing freaks me out a little though. I hope I get to read your review!

Thanks Terri, Jessica and Kara for chiming in! :-)

Speaking from the buzz flying around my house, I'm going to predict that the Hunger Games movies will make that craze even bigger.

Heather, I loved the first book and it would be cool if it was the big thing, but I don't know if it will be only because there seemed to be a lot of disappointment with the third story. I'd love to see the movie though! Didn't realize there was one coming. Very cool.

I have no idea! I just hope I like it as much as Twilight and Harry Potter. Fun, fun, fun! :)

I think a lot about this too! And like Kimberly - I hope I enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed Twilight and Harry Potter.

Hunger Games is pretty big and will get even bigger once the movie gets closer to release. I feel like one of the factors that made Twilight SO huge was when the movie came out.

I don't keep up with YA, but I keep hearing about Hunger Games. And angels. And steampunk. I guess we have to wait a little longer and see.

It seems the YA audience is the most passionate and will spend the most money so that's where the next big thing usually lies in my opinion. :O)
Hmm . . . I know an MG series that I hope will get published soon. Could it be the one??!!! ;-)

Probably YA. Wish I wrote YA, but I'm best at MG and PBs. Maybe I could write the next great picture book.

Well, you know I'm rooting for YA mermaids. But I'm very biased. :)
Jessica Nelson said…
Nothing wrong with that, Karen. :-)

Janet, I know. We have to write what we love, regardless of the market.

It could, it could, Cheryl!!!
Jessica Nelson said…
Kimberly, I totally agree! lol

Katie, I didn't realize that about Twilight, but I think you make a good point. Maybe with the movies I'll finally know how to pronounce some of the names in the book. Heeheee!

Carol, yep, I agree.

Hey Diane, what an interesting point about passion...hmmm.

I am sure there will be another big project that gets everyone's attention. There always is.
I hope Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer hits it big as a movie because I love the book series. It isn't exactly young adult. If not, I can always read the books again.
No doubt something else will come up! Maybe you'll be the one creating something new???
Thanks for your comment on my blog ( http://lifeofsorek.blogspot.com ) a while back. No, I am not pregant with Sorek, but he is very special!

Hey Nancy, I've heard of Artemis Fowl. It's MG, right?

Thanks for popping by, Marja. :-) It would be fun if I made something new!

I think YA is so big, and will continue to be, because it appeals to such a wide audience. Hunger Games is about to get another boost when the movie comes out. Personally, I'll be glad when something besides fantasy comes back into fashion.

I think you may be right ... YA definitely seems to ramping up for something crazy big. But then, Wendy may be right - Women's Fiction I hear is on the rise :)

I have to agree with the others that Hunger Games is going to get a big boost from the movie. Love HG!
