I've been writing for a little over a year now (knowing the rules, as you say), and have been married for two.
I just checked out Rachelle's blog for the first time this week, and it's already become my favorite. I jumped at the chance to have ten pages critiqued!
Well, I have been praying for a sign. Lately it seems like I have really been under spiritual attack. Time to get out the armor.
Anyway, I was putzing around since my computer crashed last night and this laptop won't recognize Word. I decided to catch up on some blog reading since I was without net for two weeks and hopped over here.
Diane, my editor at the magazine I used to work for, was talking about dusting off an inspirational book she had written some time ago. I told her I had come across a couple of agents I thought might be good for her. Then I pop in here and see this contest.
Obviously, it won't do much to help me with my epic fantasy, but I was asking for a sign and this seems like a sign to me.
Now, if I could just get a sign I am not wasting my time trying to write it would be even better.
We all have flaws, but our characters especially should have some, because what fun is there in reading about someone's perfect life? *grin* Since our MC's have a defining virtue, should they also have a defining weakness? What if their weakness is what causes some of the main conflict in the story? What if the weakness is in direct opposition to the MC's virtue? The characters must have something to struggle against, a temptation or a sin, as well as an outer conflict. What's your MC's biggest weakness? How does it define him or her? Does it propell the story? Do your characters ever fight the same kind of vices you do? After reading the Seekerville post on Moral Premise, I signed up for Natasha Kern's ACFW conference class, Vice and Virtue. Wondering what she'll talk about is turning the wheels in my head and give me some blog fodder.
When it comes to writing an interesting character, I think the best ones are those who go verbal places we're afraid to. Sometimes they use subtext, sometimes speak the truth, straight-up. Or maybe your characters break some rules you would never dare to even imagine breaking? Maybe they expose themselves, make themselves vulnerable to other characters? Or do they demand things we've learned to only wish for? What's the wildest thing one of your characters has done? Would you do it?
Reading Julie Lessman's books is like sitting down for my favorite soap for an hour of guilty pleasure. Her books pack a powerful spiritual punch though, and unlike a soap opera, her characters actually learn from their mistakes and repent. Her latest release is A Hope Undaunted . Below are some things she graciously shared with me. 1. Are there any scenes in AHU modeled after your own life? As a matter of fact, there are two things I pulled directly from my own life. The first is mentioned in the opening scene where we find out that Katie O’Connor was made fun of in kindergarten because of skin condition she had, which consequently molds her into a champion for the underdog and women’s rights. In that scene, an elderly nun asks Katie if she has leprosy in front of the whole class, and that kicks off a barrage of ridicule from her classmates, which is exactly what happened to me in the 2nd grade. You see, when I was in half-day kindergarten, I attended all day because my sisters an...

How long have you been writing? I like to read and write romantic fiction too. I'm a sucker for mushy moments!
Nice job on your blog, by the way. Very informative.
